Gas Hovers at $6.39 a Gallon as California Sits Nearly $2 Above the National Average

California's average is within five cents of its all-time record, diesel hit a record $8.44 in late September, and the state's 63.4-cent excise tax is the nation's highest. Gov. Newsom has blamed the Iran conflict and moved to allow cheaper winter-blend fuel early.

The other side: the governor's office points to global oil markets and the Strait of Hormuz; industry groups call California a “fuel island” dependent on ocean tankers.

Editorial note (mockup): Every figure above comes from the outlet or agency named. Three need care before publishing: the homelessness audit is from April 2024; the $231 billion rail figure is disputed by the Authority (its own plan says about $126.3 billion); and the LAO numbers are its November 2025 outlook, which the May Revision may have changed. We have not independently verified any of them. The tone is conservative, but the claims must stay checkable.
